The next SheArt Show will be at the Brewster Ladies Library on 6A in Brewster, Friday September 30 from 10-5 and Saturday October 1 from 10-4. My new Halloween and Fall cards will debut there.

Love the way this little village turned out! Buildings are from a kit by Martha, then I embellished with glitter and painted on snow. I created a base from plaster and snow. This is being donated to the SheArt network for their Holiday Decoration Raffle here on Cape Cod

How to make Tissue Paper Backgrounds

This is pretty straightforward, but I a got a couple emails asking for specifics so here is my technique.
Easy to do, but a bit messy.
I work on a large sheet of plexiglass, but a large plastic crafting mat would work too.

Just take any white glue, thinned to the consistency of heavy cream
and brush over a piece of cardstock. Don’t miss any of the cardstock surface, esp. the edges. I use a foam brush for this.

Then take a sheet of tissue paper at least an inch or 2 bigger all around than your cardstock.
Crumple tissue, them smooth it out. You’ll still have lots of wrinkles, and that’s good :)
Lay the tissue over the glued cardstock and press into place, working from the center out, and making sure edges stick.
You can use a brayer to push down the tissue and you will get smaller, flater wrinkles or just use your fingers and leave larger wrinkles, or do some of each :)
Let dry.
Press under a stack of books as paper will curl a bit.
Trim off extra tissue that extends over edges.
You can then cut up and use as is, or do this next step:
When completely dried, take an ink pad, old ones that are almost dried up work best. Any color and /or metallics.
Drag it across the surface and ink will catch on the tissue wrinkles adding another dimension. Your background can look like old leather or marble. Try different combos of colored tissue and colored cardstock.
I have also done some with perfect pearls.
Permutations are endless as you can see from my pics!

Cards / backgrounds

The nautilus is a paper casting from a mold of my own, mounted on one of my handpainted backgrounds.
The large starfish is also a papercasting from a mold of my own, mounted on one of my tissue paper backgrounds.
The butterfly is from Cuttlebug designed by Christine Adolph and the card uses an embossing, then a cut and embossed butterfly added on top, with the wings left unglued. That goes over an direct to paper inked background, mounted over a tissue paper background.

I think this is the most fun I have ever had with paper, glue and ink!

I used thinned white glue, cardstock and crumpled Tissue.
Can't wait to use these backgrounds on cards.

Papercasting is done from a mold.
Here are 3 cards I made from various molds I created.

I made my molds from Sculpey, mixed a batch of cotton linter in my blender, added color in some cases, patted the cotton liner into my mold, pressed out the water and let it dry.

Dried castings can be colored or embellished.
